When applying the Martingal system and betting on Red/Black (or Even/Odd, Low/High) there is over 80% chance that
you gain from it after 18 spins.
If you are willing to bet (a multiple of) $100 to gain (a multiple of) $10 this can be a reasonable system. One should
not forget though that 81% (or 89%) win chance means you will still lose sometimes. Remember that this is the same chance of NOT seeing 3x Red in a row
(as the chance of seeing Red 3x is 11%). Typically it means that if you play 10x and make sure you stop after a win, that 9 out of ten times
you will gain $9, but 1x you will lose all $100.
Also it will not work on longer spins. As shown on the 30 roulette spins simulation the chance of going bankrupt
slowly increases. When looking at longer spins, it shows that after 81 spins the chance of winning is equal to the chance of having gone bankrupt.
Doubling your bankroll is not easy with this system. Starting with $100 and having a minimum of $1 bet
delivers 18 roulette spins $118 in the best case. You need many spins, but we found that after many spins the chance
of winning decreases. The only way to double your bankroll is taking big bets, eg. $14 at a time. Problem is that
with a limited bankroll of $100, you can afford to lose only 3 times: $14 on 1st lose bet $28, on 2nd lose bet $56.
Below a summary of the Martingale strategy when betting on Red/Black.
The starting point was a $100 bankroll, and minimum bets of $1. The strategies are not only rated on
the chance to come out winning after 18 spins ( win%), but also what the average winning bankroll is (Av. Win) and
what the average bankroll is for the strategy, including the losses ( Strat. Av.). Note that for normal bets
the strategy average bankroll after 18 spins is smaller than $100 due to the House edge. Only certain
strategies beat the House Edge and show an average bankroll after 18 spins larger than $100.
So below, it shows that not even the 'normal' Martingale can beat the House Edge (average bankroll
for the strategy is $98.53 aftet 18 spins). Only when you STOP AFTER A WIN you can beat the House Edge
with the Martingale system (average bankroll for the strategy is then $101.96).
Strategy making gains: | win% | Av. Win | Strat. Av. | doubl% |
---|---|---|---|---|
Martingale bet Red/Black | 81% | $ 108,25 | $ 98,53 | ~30% |
Martingale bet Red/Black stop after a win | 89% | $ 109,58 | $ 101,96 | ~30% |
